Pafos Markideion Theatre - The Acoustic Shell

29/3/2018

Background
During the initial planning of the Pafos Markideion Theatre it was always the intention to have an Acoustic Shell for deployment on stage. This was to comprise of a back wall with tapered side stage walls and an inclined ceiling sloping down towards the back wall. The layouts of these elements were to generally follow on from the lines set out in the acoustic treatment of the auditorium.

Due to budget constraints the Acoustic Shell was deleted from the initial capital project, to be looked at as additional equipment at a later stage. It was acknowledged that it would be unlikely that there would ever be sufficient funding to incorporate any form of motorisation, with the associated safety elements, for a flown ceiling and that any form of suspension would have to be manually operated; probably incorporated into the existing counterweight flying system.
As Multistage were already supplying and installing the counterweight flying system an amount of preliminary design work on the acoustic shell was carried out following the guidelines set out by the Architect and the Acoustic Consultant.

The Markideion Theatre opened on the 18th November 2017 with a show featuring the actress Charlotte Rampling presenting works by the poets Marguerite Yourcenar and Constantine Cavafy.

Under the auspices of the Festival Committee the theatre will go on to present further shows this year.

During the course of carrying out the initial contract Multistage received an additional order to install a further six counterweight sets, additional lighting equipment and a paging system; all of this was installed and commissioned before opening.

A bespoke Acoustic Shell is currently under manufacture for imminent shipping to Cyprus.  Multistage will be returning in the New Year to install this.

It is with great sadness that we inform you of the retirement of our Project Director, John Tune.  John was instrumental in the founding of Multistage International Limited back in January 2001 and many of you will have known and worked with John much before then.
John started his career in the theatre industry way back in 1959 when he was employed by Connaught Theatre, Worthing as an Assistant Electrician having completed an Electrical Engineering Course at West Sussex College of Further Education.  John moved to a number of different theatres working his way up to Senior Audio Visual Engineer then during the 1970's and 1980's John spent much time in the Middle East working on and overseeing electrical and mechanical theatre installations.  But it was whilst working on the Royal Theatre, Thessolaniki, Greece in 1998 that the partnership with Atlas Pantou, Cyprus came about and at the end of the project, Multistage International was established.
With nearly 50 years working in the theatre industry John's knowledge and expertise has been invaluable to the Company but we wish him and his family all the very best for a much deserved retirement.
